The importance of enzymes

Enzymes and our acid-base balance

What are enzymes?

Under the microscope, they look inconspicuously small, but in our body they still have great effects: enzymes are vital organic compounds. They are formed in the cell and control the metabolism of the organism. Most enzymes are proteins, and act as catalysts (accelerators) of chemical reactions.

Enzymes drive many important biochemical reactions in the body. In this way, they convert substances into other substances and break down large molecules. Therefore, enzymes are also referred to as biocatalysts.

Enzymes: digestion, metabolism and regeneration

Enzymes have many different functions. From digestion and metabolic processes to the translation of the genetic material into proteins, enzymes are involved as biocatalysts.

Enzymes are responsible for all activities in the body. Even "thinking" requires enzyme activity. Among other things, they help to digest the food consumed and to absorb important nutrients from proteins, carbohydrates, fats and plant fibers.

While deficient enzymes have a negative effect on our metabolism, these small all-rounders are significantly involved in cell regeneration and effectively rid the body of toxins and pollutants.

But that's not all: as versatile catalysts, they strengthen the immune system and ensure that other substances in the body, such as minerals, vitamins and hormones, can do their job.

The correct pH value is essential for all enzyme activities

We recognize how important the acid-base balance is, by the great role that our enzymes play in our body. An optimal function of the enzymes is essential for survival, whereby the function of these in turn depends on the pH value of their environment.

Enzymes only function optimally at a certain pH value. They are very sensitive to change.

There are different types of enzymes, while these are considered the 2 most important:

  1. Digestive enzymes: The main digestive enzymes are: protease, amylase, lactase and lipase. They help in the gastrointestinal tract in the breakdown of protein, carbohydrates and fats and their function is dependent on a good pH in the gastrointestinal tract. If the enzyme activity is disturbed by hyperacidity, all sorts of intestinal complaints can arise from the intestine.
  1. Metabolic enzymes: Metabolic enzymes are responsible for structuring, repairing and rebuilding every cell, organ and tissue. A disturbance of the activity of these enzymes, which is caused by a too high pH value, can lead to faster aging and other health problems.

In order to support the optimal functionof these enzymes, it is important to provide them with the right environment with the right pH value.  The acid-base balance plays an important role here and can contribute to a better health.
